Remember you're only washing the motor not the filter media so there really should be no worry. Then place it all back together reversing the steps above. You can then test this in a bowl of water, get a big bowl fill it up with water ensuring your filter is all in one piece put it into the bowl of water plug it in. Turn it on, you will probably find it jets out quite powerfully. Place the filter back onto where it was and turn it on. On my girlfriends 60Litre tank we used a Fluval U2 filter instead, although you may get away with using a Fluval U1. Like Ludwig said, its a great idea to keep that air stone going for surface agitation in the mean time. Though the stingray is actually quite powerful I do question its filtration abilities however. Don't use tap water because the chlorine and chloramine in tap water will kill the beneficial bacteria. Companies tell you to change it out every other week so they'd get more business, but it's really not necessary (really, it'd be worse for your aquarium). Most of the beneficial bacteria lives in the filter media and you don't want to throw this away. Here's a good read on the nitrogen cycle and starting aquariums: You're probably cycled since the tank is secondhand, but I'd still get a liquid test kit (don't get test strips since they're known to be inaccurate), such as the API master test kit, and monitor the toxic ammonia and nitrite levels. If you want to change the filter media, don't switch it out right away. Try to put both media in at the same time to get the bacteria to transfer onto the new media, wait a month or so, then take the old media out. Edit: Oh hey, after Goggling the filter, I realized I have the same filter. But I've bought it secondhand and haven't used it. Let me see if I can find it. So making your own sponge should be fine; it's also cheaper. The cages are supposed to be filled with ceramic beads and carbon. Typically, you don't really need carbon since it'd only used for removing odours and chemicals such as meds. The beads are supposed to house some of the beneficial bacteria, but it doesn't seem to be very porous, I don't think it does a good job in doing that. Can you take a picture of the contents of the other cage that's been opened. Also, what fish do you have? But what would you do? What type of gourami do you have. Is it a dwarf gourami. I'm sorry to tell you this, but 60 litres (15 gallons) is much too small for the angel and flying foxes (Siamese algae eaters), these need at least 30 gallons. Some may also argue that mollies need a minimum of 20 gallons. I'd suggest rehoming the angel, flying foxes, and mollies and buy 3-4 more cardinal tetras.

If you have the gourami, platies, tetras and snails, the stocking would already be at its limit. They may seem happy now, and the water parameters may be fine now, but I'm assuming that these fish are rather small since the aquarium is only 4 months old. Soon the fish will outgrow the tank. As for your filter, I'd honestly get a new one. Even though I haven't used the Stingray myself (even though I have one), I don't know how well the sponge filter circulates the water. I'd get a hang on back (HOB ) filter or an internal one like the Tetra Whispers. The AquaClear filters are also good. You could also try finding another one secondhand. But if the Stingray works for you, that'd be fine too, but I just find it doesn't give you much room for putting other stuff in there (such as old filter media along side the new or additional filter media). If you're keeping the Stingray, any highly porous sponge would work. For example, I wouldn't use kitchen sponge material since it's too dense and would burn out the motor. As for the cages, you could just leave them alone. Like I mentioned earlier, carbon is only used to remove odours and chemicals. While zeolite does aid in removing ammonia, you shouldn't have any ammonia problems to begin with. If the aquarium is cycled (refer to blogs above), than ammonia shouldn't be an issue. So, those cages, in my opinion, are a waste of money. You could either put all your fish into the 50 gallon, which would put your 50 at fully stocked. And leaves your 15 open for other fish. Or you can put your 10 neons and the cardinal tetras in the 15 gallon and everything else moved to the 50 gallon. And maybe, just maybe, you can place the gourami in with the tetras in the 15 gallon. I really wouldn't worry about the carbon. Even though you've already bought some new ones, don't use it. Only use it when you need to remove chemicals such as meds.

If you are referring to this, then I'd say remove the current cages (since the carbon and zeolite has probably been used up) and place the biomax in the filter. It's up to you whether or not you want to place them in the cages. The Biomax would be better than the carbon since it can house a lot of BB. They've been used up. If the white spot and fin rot has been resolved, then it's fine to transfer some of the biomax over. Using new biomax would also be fine, but it just doesn't have any BB living in it yet. If you threw away the filter cartridges, it does not mean death for the fish automatically, but, it probably means too much ammonia, until the bacteria grow back, and that means lots of water changes. If you only tossed carbon, well, that won't kill fish either, but, might also affect the cycle, it would depend on what other media was in the filter.
