Amazon Customer 5.0 out of 5 stars The Carbon Monoxide unit had an eight year life but lasted an extra 3 months before we had to replace. We were very pleased with the old one. This new one has an increased Carbon Monoxide unit life to 10 years. We also like that it talks as well as beeps, so you don't have to remember what a particular beep pattern means. Great product.Saved our house, literally. Battery charger caught on fire in an upstairs bedroom.I even called the Gas Company to inspect and they went off when he was here confirming there wasn't a problem. By then, it was too late to return them so this time I went to Home Depot and got 10yr, built-in battery units. Still went with Kiddie though. So it was these I was unhappy with and not Kiddie overall. Update. The 10yr non-replaceable battery ones I bought to replace them, 1 of the 3 is going off with low battery peeps after 7 months. Doh!!Throughout the previous 7 years, the earlier version always tested OK and seemed to perform as designed. This new replacement has a 10 year life and operates basically the same as the old one. Best part is that the mounting plates are interchangeable, so I didn't need to install a new mounting plate!It fits my older bracket which made installation a snap. It's quite loud and the voice definitely makes it a real standout. I also like the fact that the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarmes are in one unitAfter looking for solutions I accepted that it was just old and needed replacing so I did a search and it popped up here on Amazon. It was a no brainer since the wall plate was already in place. Here's to another 20!
They were all dated 2009. The new ones came with batteries and were super easy to install. We didn't have to change any wiring or bases.I was upset about this because there are many sellers that sell used or rip-offs of authentic items. Better off buying dual sensor smoke, then Carbon monoxide combined with explosive gas detection. That is max protection for minimum installations.
My television caught on fire and the whole living room was filled with smoke before I opened a window. This product did not detect the smoke. Bottom line.I had previously installed Kidde smoke detectors. Let me tell you they saved the whole top of my house as I had also purchased fire extinguishers. One in the kitchen, one upstairs in the linen closet and 1 large one in the garage. The source was later determined to be a electrical short in a fan in my upstairs bedroom. I was downstairs when I heard the detectors going off. I ran upstairs and pushed open my bedroom door to see flames and smoke. I called 911, grabbed the extinguisher, pulled the pin, held my breath and went at it. Thanks to the detectors I was able to get the fire under control before the fire department arrived. Must say you got to maintain a level head and know what you can and can't do in the event of an emergency. So I am a believer. The detectors were more than ten years old and needed to be replaced. I bought 6 of these which were very easy to install. I like that they are for both smoke and carbon monoxide. The only recommendation I would have is that I wish the voice warning were louder, but I can assure you that you will definitely hear the alarm in an emergency. I highly recommend this product.Think about this, If I would have tried to put out an electrical fire with a water hose, my house wouldn't have been the only thing on fire, so arm yourself correctly.As far as I can tell, the alarms work, but I had some minor issues with the units. First, it would have been nice if the instructions indicated which size pilot hole was required for the wallboard anchor. Next, one of the units had a desiccant pack wedged in the battery compartment in such a way that I could not get the battery cover off without a lot of effort. Finally, one of the units was missing a battery. None of these are a big deal, but together, they indicate low quality and poor attention to detail.
Next time I'll go somewhere else.It was a simple process overall. It seems trivial when installing a device to protect your household of seven people, but I did have to dig up one anchor to install one of them because it only came with one. We had hardwired Kidde alarms in our old house. Good equipment and I like the talking feature. Might be good to have some extra anchirs around when installing or for Kidde to throw an extra one in each package. I got it done. Thanks for helping me to keep the family safe.He almost died, it's a miracle he's here, and his mind is no longer what it once was. Point being: I'm determined to protect against both threats. This seems to be the most cost effective way to do so. The unit runs on batteries only, which is good for me because I'm not going to re-wire the housse for them. As to effectiveness: the smoke alarms do go off if we burn something in the oven. And the CO alarm went off after we installed a new AC coil, we think because of the soddering. Not much to go one in terms of effectiveness, I don't plan to run a controlled test for CO. If you're in the market for a unit that covers both CO and Fire, and you don't have the house wired for them, then I recommend this unit.We purchased 8, one for each vent and one for each end of our hallway per our HVAC contractor's instructions. He also said the state of CA requires you to install new ones every ten years. We tested each one as we installed them and only one failed but it was just because one of the batteries that came with it was bad. Very happy with the purchase.Enough for every area of the house.
